We often hear about safety in the workplace, but what happens when we go home? Working with our HSE Manager, we have consolidated the key points to consider.
Take a moment to think about what you would do in an emergency in the place you spend most of your time. Here are a few tips to keep you and your loved ones safe.
1. Create an Emergency Plan
- Identify Exits: Know all possible exits from your home.
- Meeting Point: Establish a safe meeting point outside your home.
- Emergency Contacts: Keep a list of emergency contacts easily accessible.
2. Install Safety Devices
- Smoke Alarms: Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and test them monthly.
- Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Place carbon monoxide detectors near sleeping areas.
- Fire Extinguishers: Keep fire extinguishers in key areas like the kitchen, garage and near bedrooms.
3. Practice Safety Drills
- Fire Drills: Regularly practice fire drills with your family.
- Evacuation Routes: Ensure everyone knows the evacuation routes.
4. Know Basic First Aid
- CPR: Learn CPR and basic first aid techniques.
- First Aid Kit: Keep a well-stocked first aid kit accessible.
5. Emergency Numbers
- Emergency Services: Know the numbers for local emergency services.
6. Communicate
- Family Plan: Discuss the emergency plan with all family members.
- Neighbours: Inform neighbours about your emergency plan, especially if you have elderly or disabled family members.
7. Regular Maintenance
- Check Alarms: Regularly check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
- Inspect Extinguishers: Ensure fire extinguishers are in good working condition.
- Review Plan: Periodically review and update your emergency plan.
8. Stay Calm
- Remain Calm: In an emergency, stay calm and follow your plan.
- Assist Others: Help others if you can do so safely.
